The EB Club of Illinois Annual Spring Trial marked the beginning of Dawson Lake Bretons' 2026 field trial season. Tank turned in strong performances throughout the weekend, running with style, pointing multiple birds each day, and demonstrating the qualities expected of a finished dog. Despite consistent bird work and solid performances, he was unable to put everything together for a placement. Tea also competed during the weekend, earning an Excellent rating in the Gun stake. The trial provided a strong start to the season and valuable experience for both dogs as they continued their 2026 campaign.

Recap / Highlights

Dawson Lake Bretons traveled to Georgia for four days of competition, with Tank competing in eight Open events against some of the country's top Epagneul Bretons. The trip was highlighted by two CAC & RCACT performances and a Pass, showcasing his ability on both liberated and wild bobwhite.

On Sunday, December 21, Tank earned a CAC & RCACT in Open Liberated Solo at Hannahatchee Farms under judge Clint LaFary. Competition concluded on Monday, December 22, at Namni Plantation, where Tank earned another CAC & RCACT in Open Wild Braces under judges Will Crowe and Bud Shipp before earning a Pass in Open Wild Solo under judge Will Crowe. On a day when wild birds proved difficult to find, Tank was the only dog to locate birds during the Open Wild Braces competition.

Tea did not compete during the trip. I served as the judge for the Gun Dog class, and under field trial rules, judges are not permitted to compete in the class they are judging. Additionally, Tea had recently finished raising a litter and was not yet back in trial condition.

The Georgia trip closed out Dawson Lake Bretons' 2025 trial season on a high note, providing a strong finish to another year of competition and valuable experience for the kennel.

NAVHDA Natural Ability — 112 Prize I

Tank completed his NAVHDA Natural Ability Test with a perfect score of 112, earning a Prize I.

Throughout the test, he performed each section flawlessly, showing the natural qualities we want to see in a young hunting dog. His search, use of nose, pointing, tracking, cooperation, desire to work, and water performance all came together for a complete performance from start to finish.

That perfect 112 Prize I score was an early indication of the instinct, intelligence, and drive Tank would continue to show as he developed into the hunting dog he is today.

Recap / Highlights

It was a hot day at the Fall Wild Trial, and bird work was hard to come by. With dogs struggling to find birds throughout the day, Skip stayed at it and continued hunting until late in his run, when he located a single quail.

Skip handled the bird cleanly and remained steady through the shot, earning the PASS he needed to complete his GUN title.

Even more impressive, Skip completed the title in just three runs, a difficult milestone that requires everything to come together each time a dog hits the field. Finding a bird when opportunities were scarce and finishing the title under tough conditions made the accomplishment that much more meaningful.

Recap / Highlights

Skip had an outstanding weekend at the Heart of the Prairie Pointing Dog Club trial, taking 1st place in Liberated Gun Solo both days and earning two RCAGTs.

Throughout the weekend, Skip ran hard, hunted intelligently, and handled his birds cleanly. He showed strong, purposeful ground application, pointed with confidence, remained steady, and performed flawlessly during both of his winning runs.

Unfortunately, the barrage was a different story. Running against females proved to be a little too much of a distraction, and his mind was somewhere other than the competition. While it kept him from finishing the weekend the way we had hoped, his two first-place finishes and two RCAGTs made it a very successful weekend and showed the quality of work he is capable of when he is locked in.
